The second series

Capital Formation

Most of what this site publishes asks one question: is this business exceptional? These four pieces ask a different one. Is this market becoming investable — and what is a number worth before anyone can check it?

The pieces

Every company here sits outside the Exceptional Company Series, and all for the same structural reason rather than four separate failures. A bank is assessed on capital adequacy and the compounding of book value. A holding company on net asset value per share. A fund is not a company at all. None of those is the earnings line the exceptional grade is computed from, so the grade cannot be applied — which is a statement about which instrument fits, never about quality.

Three of these are Georgian and one is Uzbek, which is the reason this is named for the thesis rather than the map. What they share is not a border but a condition: a market where the institutions, the disclosure and the liquidity are all still being built, and where the hardest question is usually not what a business earns but whether you can verify it. That is a different discipline from underwriting a compounder, and it is worth naming as one.
