This is The Conviction Play. Health and wellbeing. One of the forces we underwrite against, and this is what it is and where it leads. Populations live longer with more years of managed illness, and the care has to be delivered by a workforce that is not growing. Spending lands on diagnosis, intervention, chronic therapy and the systems that deliver them with fewer hands, and, increasingly, on keeping people out of that system at all: nutrition, prevention and the things people buy to stay well. The earlier the money is spent, the cheaper the outcome, which is why the same destination now attracts capital at both ends. The physical world reaches this one too. Heat, air quality and the range of disease are health inputs, not background conditions. Underneath it, the themes. Precision Diagnostics and Testing Infrastructure. Diagnosis happening earlier and getting more specific, which means more tests per patient and more instruments in more places. The money is in the consumable used up on every test, not in the machine that reads it. Interventional and Platform Medicine. Procedures moving onto platforms, robotic, catheter-based or image-guided, that a clinician trains on for years. The platform earns on every procedure it performs, and the training is the moat. Metabolic and Chronic Disease Therapeutics. Conditions managed for decades rather than cured. A drug class that works at scale does not only sell to its own patients; it moves demand in every specialty downstream of it. Preventative and Self-Directed Health. Money spent staying well rather than being treated. Screening paid for out of pocket, nutrition, sleep, recovery, mental health. Elective, mostly reimbursed by nobody, and rising with age and income at the same time. Care, Health and Dependency Infrastructure Expansion. Delivering care with a workforce that is not growing. Home and residential capacity, the staffing and scheduling systems behind it, and whatever lets fewer people look after more. This one is about who does the work, which is what separates it from the medicine beside it. We have written up Thermo Fisher Scientific, IDEXX Laboratories and Intuitive Surgical under this force. Each has a profile on the site saying what the business is and where the argument for it stops. The whole map is on the site, with every theme written out and the companies we have covered under each one. It is free, with no email address and no paywall, at the conviction play dot com. This is one of a series on the forces. The companies we judge exceptional have their own recordings, and everything we have made is collected at the conviction play dot com, under Listen. A note before we finish. This episode is narrated by a synthetic voice, not by the author. This is a map of where capital is going. It is not a view on any share price, not a valuation, and not a recommendation to buy or sell anything. A force can be real and every company exposed to it still be a poor investment. The Conviction Play publishes general commentary for information only. It is not investment advice and it is not a personal recommendation. Capital is at risk, and the value of investments can fall as well as rise. The map is revised as the evidence changes, and this episode reflects it as it stood on the day it was made. That was Health and wellbeing, from The Conviction Play. Thank you for listening.
